There's More Behind the Story of USD's 'Instagram Girl'

Donatella Johnson, then known as Donatella Falcomer, became one of the University of San Diego's most recognizable students through her work creating content for the university's Instagram and TikTok accounts. Behind that public role was a story shaped by international athletics, unexpected setbacks, faith, and an ability to adapt.

Growing up in Eswatini, Donatella excelled in academics, public speaking, and several sports. Gymnastics became her primary focus, and by age 16 she had earned a place on Eswatini's national team. The discipline and mental confidence required to compete at that level later helped her navigate major changes in her life.

She arrived in California in 2021 intending to pursue gymnastics at UCLA, but a blood disease ended that path within weeks. When she also learned that her high school credential did not qualify her for direct admission to a four-year university without an athletic scholarship, she enrolled at Moorpark College and began rebuilding her plans.

After transferring to USD, Donatella immersed herself in campus life and became the university's first social media intern. Her work helped put a human face on USD's digital channels while giving her practical experience in marketing, storytelling, and audience engagement.

During her senior year, she and Elijah Johnson launched SafeBallot, a blockchain-protected digital voting platform that grew out of the Fowler Business Concept Challenge. As graduation approached, Donatella was preparing for the Fowler Global Social Innovation Challenge finals and beginning a sports-marketing role with the San Diego Legion. Her journey reflects the resilience to turn an interrupted dream into new opportunities in business, media, and leadership.
